It is like a massage for the soul

When people think of Shiatsu they often think of massage.
As someone who searches for the perfect massage like a surfer following the endless summer searching for the perfect wave, I can tell you that Shiatsu is so much more than a massage.
I can not begin to understand how this ancient Japanese form of bodywork and way of living in harmony with our true nature has been kept secret for so long.
Shiatsu is a holistic healing approach which considers all aspects of life to create long lasting change. It uses the East Asian Medical Framework for diagnosis to ensure that each treatment is targeted to the unique individual’s needs.
It works on the root of the problem of dis-ease physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually by opening up the flow of Qi (energy) in the main 12 meridians and the 8 extraordinary vessels of the body.
This supports the balancing of the body, mind and spirit and feels amazing at the same time.
This Japanese treatment is traditionally given on a futon on the floor and can include moxa, cupping, acupressure, guasha stretching and muscle releasing techniques from the zen, barefoot and classical shiatsu traditions.

What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping is a technique used to increase blood flow and remove stagnant fluids and toxins at a cellular level.
This increase in circulation allows the free flow of Qi leading to reduced pain, muscle tension and inflammation.
It is an ancient technique that was used in Egypt, Greek, Chinese and East Asian Cultures. It originally used hollowed out animal horns.
The modern technique now use glass, bamboo, silicone or earthenware cups.
A heat source is used to create a vacuum seal drawing the skin and muscle up into the cup.
Cupping may be used to treat muscular pain, congestion, headaches, respiratory issues.
A common side effect of cupping is the round marks that it creates on the skin as seen on professional athletes such as swimmers and tennis players. These marks may last up to 10 days.
What is Moxa Therapy?

Moxibustion (moxa) is a form of heat therapy where the herb mugwort is burnt directly or indirectly on the skin.
The heat generated through the burning of the mugwort enters the channel of the body and promotes the flow of Qi.
If you are someone who is sensitive to energy you may feel the effects spiral up the channel and notice the instant comfort that it brings.
If you are not yet attuned to this sensitivity you will be aware of the heat in the area of the body being focused on just as you would feel warming up on a small fire on a cool crisp night.
What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is the gentle scrapping of the body with a smooth spoon or tool to help improve circulation and reduce inflammation.
Gua Sha improves the flow of Qi in areas where it has become stuck or stagnant, improving muscular tension. A good example of this is across the neck and shoulders for someone who has been sitting at a computer all day.
This treatment often leaves marks on the skin where blood circulation has been brought to areas to induce the flow of Qi.

What Does a Typical Shiatsu Session Look Like?
A shiatsu session is as individual as there are people. It is a collaborative treatment where you are encouraged to be engaged and curious as you are honoured as the expert of your own body.
There are many techniques used in a shiatsu session so you are able to modify everything to your unique needs.
A typical session begins with a diagnosis which may include lifestyle questions, pulse taking, observing the surface of the tongue and palpation of the hara (tummy or back). It is with this information that the treatment plan is formulated in a collaborative manner to ensure your treatment is something truly special.
A treatment is usually conducted on a futon on the floor and may include barefoot, palming, stretching, moxa or cupping therapies. The presence that you receive in a treatment creates a safe space where magic can unfold and the whispers of the soul can be heard.
The client is fully clothed, except during the use of cupping, moxa and gua sha therapies where the skin is exposed for this portion of the treatment only.
After a treatment you are left feeling much more grounded, relaxed, focused and balanced in a way that allows life to begin to flow.
